The department of Mathematical Foundations of Informatics (MFI) was formed in 1988, at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (IMI), Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). In addition to its research contributions, it is committed to education and industry support.

Various aspects are considered: fundamental research on coding theory, security and cryptography.
